About Me

I am a PhD student studying Strategic Communication at the University of Colorado Boulder, at the College of Media, Communication, and Information's Department of Advertising, Public Relations, and Media Design. I am researching the intersection of gender and militarism in the video games industry. My work touches on theories of the public sphere, critical public relations, and affect to arrive at a unique perspective on the role of strategic communication in linking the industry to military servicemembers.

Previously

I was, until very recently, a non-profit communications executive in Colorado, and I left that job because the demands on my time were too much. Before that I was the communications manager at a civil society foundation operating in the former Soviet Union – and before that, in think tanks and government contracting working on national security issues. There's a whole story there, including two instances of my being chased off social media by angry trolls, but I'm not in a place where I want to talk much about it yet. Maybe some day.

Other things

I wrote a book in 2010, Afghanistan Journal: Selections from Registan.net. It is obsolete in a lot of ways, but I do think it captures a neat little microcosm of the war at its halfway mark. You can purchase it here.

If you're interested in my past as a public intellectual you can find hours upon hours of my media appearances and public speeches on Youtube. In addition, I’m up on About.me, as well as LinkedIn and Academia.edu.
